Read MoreWhat was Barry’s situation before working with Advocacy Focus?
Barry* lives with two carers who support him with all aspects of daily life. During a social care review, his social worker was considering reducing his overnight support from two carers to one. The proposal was that the remaining carer would be asleep during the night, rather than awake.
What did the Independent Advocate do to help Barry?
An Independent Advocate visited Barry at home several times. The first visit took place jointly with his social worker, who Barry has a positive relationship with.
Barry’s carers explained the best ways to communicate with him, including that he does not like long conversations. During later visits, the Advocate met with Barry alone and kept discussions short. They also used gestures and signs to support his understanding.
Barry agreed that the Advocate could speak with his carers, who shared helpful information about what matters most to him and what helps him feel happy and secure.
What was the outcome?
Barry and his carers explained that he did not want any changes to his overnight care. The Advocate shared Barry’s wishes with his social worker, and it was agreed that his current level of support would remain in place.
Barry was pleased with this outcome.
Why was advocacy support so effective?
Barry was given time, space and the right support to express his wishes in a way that worked for him. He was included in discussions with his carers and social worker, ensuring he was listened to throughout the review process.
