Leah*, a 14-year-old girl, had received support from services for most of her life due to a family breakdown. She comes from a large family and was living away from her parents.
What did the Independent Advocate do to help Leah?
The Advocate met with Leah at school to discuss advocacy and how it could support her. Leah confided that she had no one to talk to and spent much of her time worrying. She wasn’t sure who to turn to for help and didn’t want to burden her family. Over time, the Advocate built a strong relationship with Leah, and she began to share her feelings during their visits.
The Advocate was able to speak on Leah’s behalf, expressing her views when Leah felt too anxious to voice them herself. Throughout their meetings, the Advocate provided a safe space for Leah and kept her informed about relevant updates and meetings.
What was the outcome?
Leah was able to speak with someone independent and developed a positive, trusting relationship. With the support of her Advocate, she felt confident enough to attend her first core group meeting, feeling informed about what was happening for her and her family.
Attending the core group boosted Leah’s confidence, allowing her to engage with other professionals and speak up in meetings, where she felt heard and listened to.
Why was advocacy support so effective?
Without an Advocate, Leah might have spent more time feeling isolated and worried by the challenges in her life, with no one fully understanding her feelings. Support has now been put in place to help improve Leah’s wellbeing.
Leah now feels in control of her own life. She confidently asks questions and, as a result, has gained a clearer understanding of what her future holds.
